Evolution of Men’s Casual Wear

Casual wear, the phrase in itself invokes a feeling of relaxation and comfort. An attire that can be worn anywhere, without any rules or codes of mixing and matching the set, and just letting you be you. And Venfield’s collection of casual wear shows the evolution of the attire and is a sign of how far it has come.

The history of casual wear dates back to centuries ago. The only form of casual wear that was near existence was some kind of knitted sportswear that provided a little more loose dressing option and a sense of comfort factor. But with years, things progressed, and now the options are endless! Here is a quick timeline of the evolution of men’s casual wear.

First Casuals

Sportswear, specifically, golf dresses were prominent back in the day in around 1900s. In addition to this, men also wore suspenders and suits as a form of casual wear. The colour choices were basic black and charcoal, and the collars of the shirts were detachable. The main reason for detachability being that the collars were considered an important aspect of clothing and had to be cleaned separately.

The Second Wave

About 20 years later, in the 1920s, things got an improvement. Lighter colours and shades were in the wardrobes. Bow ties, ties, and belts started accompanying the suits. Pants saw the addition of creases and cuffs. Hats and berets were a great companion to casual wear.

The 1930’s

The-1930’s

With the 1930s, came in a fashion that would last long. This is the birth of some of the features in suits and jackets that we use till date. Slim waisted courts came into the picture with jackets with long lapels. People explored more affordable fabric options like tweed, linen and wool. People started seeing loafers as a great casual footwear choice with their attire. Zoot suits were a thing in the US, and that came with long sleeves, tight pants, and an accessory dangling by the waist.

Post-War Era

This post-war period saw an amalgamation of fashion from both the western world and the traditional world. Suits became more prominent and common. Wide and coloured trousers often striped came to trend. And ties were a raving new accessory. Ties came in many shapes and sizes, and people went for both coloured ties and silk ties.

Businesses slowly started to boom, and hence the casuals were adopted and influenced by the same. Casual wear became leisurewear. People started going for shorts as a comfort option and the fabric became lighter and stretchable.
The culture of black or white shirts was on a high, and sports jerseys were considered a form of outdoor casual wear. This era also saw the origins of denim, leather jackets, and a proper range of fashionable casuals.

The Fashionable Decade

The 1970s was an era where people started noticing their favourite stars in an outfit and planned to have a similar one in their wardrobe. Bell bottom pants with more colourful shirt options were common. Sport shoes under pants was a new line that people embraced graciously.
Tracksuits were seen as something that can be worn both in the indoors and outdoors.

The Late 1980s

The evolution of fashion here was at its peak. Fashion brands popped up everywhere, and people started recognizing them as a symbol of prestige. And this was the decade where we saw the introduction of printed shirts. This opened up a wide world of possibilities in terms of top-wear for men.
People went for more uptight wear for outdoors and stuck to loose and baggy clothes for indoors.

The end of the century saw a drastic improvement in fashion ideas. The successful fashion trends were retained, and others were improved upon. Superhero t-shirts, jeans, sneakers, shorts, and all other comfortable and cool attire made their way into the market. They were affordable and very common all across the world.
Jeans and denim were also normalized and were wearable day to day by both men and women.

The Fusion Era
